SAFETY TIPS

Below are some helpful safety tips provided by The Steritech Group, Inc.

  • Keeping heavy items in the “Power Lifting Zone” between the knees and shoulders helps to prevent injury. Using storage bins can help guide employees to the proper storage location.
  • Cleaning hoods at the beginning of the day, while equipment such as fryers, griddles and grills are cold is much safer than doing these tasks while the equipment is hot.
  • Mounting trash cans on dollies reduces the need for employees to lift and carry heavy containers overlong distances.
  • Regular inspection of high chairs for cleanliness and damage to safety straps is vital to keeping parents happy and children safe.
  • Covering uneven areas of floor in the kitchen with floor mats can help to prevent slips and falls.
  • Cutting boards that move around on a counter top can result in injury. Utilizing a towel or mat underneath a cutting board can help.
  • Have a fully stocked first aid kit available at all times with brightly colored bandages for kitchen staff. Brightly colored bandages are more likely to be discovered if they fall off into food.
  • If you take a hot pan or a cover from the fire and put it on a counter, leave a hot pad on the hot lid or utensil as a warning to the others in the kitchen that it is hot.
  • Use utensils with cool-touch handles to prevent burns.
  • Knives should only be used to cut food product. Use scissors, bag openers or safety utility knives to open bags and boxes. You’ll keep your knives sharp longer and also be safer.
  • Make sure that someone trained in first aid and CPR.
